Catherine Menewisch, MSN, CRNP  the designer and CEO and Elaine Wozniak, MS, A/GNP and Vice President are sisters and nurse practitioners living on opposite sides of the country (NJ & AZ). Underscoring this national problem, simultaneously, both discovered  the prevalence of infections with MRSA and other Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs) in their respective patient populations. This was especially the case in those patients returning from a hospitalization. Local news stations were making announcements about the spread of these so-called “Super Bugs” into our communities at large. In addition to hospitals and health care facilities, schools, health clubs and high school athletic departments were reporting infections. For these concerned sisters, this became a call for action.

In reviewing the epidemiology of how these organisms are spread, they were quickly reminded that germs can live for some time on surfaces & objects, especially those that are not properly disinfected. Most if not all health care workers wear watches. Everyone knows of the importance of wearing gloves and good hand washing practices. But anyone who has worn their wrist-watch with gloves, knows that in short order, the watch often migrates out of the glove and potentially into an invisible field of contamination. Typically we do not wash our watches.
